Cleveland: Surveillance tape leads to arrest in bank robbery

Cleveland Police surveillance tape taken from a bank robbery has led to the arrest of an East Cleveland man.

Two of the 100 surveillance cameras erected in Cleveland Mount Pleasant neighborhood captured images of a man fleeing the Key Bank branch at East 140th and Kinsman following a robbery.

Civic leaders chose to put those cameras in place to help deter crime in the neighborhood and to help in police investigations. Police have full access to the cameras.

This morning, Cleveland Police spokesman Lt. Thomas Stacho said a tip caller to a Crimestoppers hotline had led to the arrest. The East Cleveland man is being held in jail while charges are determined.

Yesterday morning, police say a man entered the bank and handed a teller a note demanding money that also read "Don't be a hero." The man threatened he had a gun but no weapon was ever shown.

After getting the money, the man fled on foot heading westbound. His getaway was captured by the surveillance cameras including an armed security guard giving chase with his gun drawn.
